Experiencing the Thrill of Baseball Season in Miami

Living in South Florida provides access to attending live professional sporting events all year long. In the Spring the event to attend is Opening Day for the Miami Marlins when there is always hope for team success. Whether you are a seasoned fan or new to the sport, attending the opening day offered a unique and exhilarating experience.

The Opening Day game for 2024 was against the Pittsburgh Pirates with Jesus Luzardo starting for the Marlins and Mitch Keller starting for the Pirates. In this guide, Condo Journey will cover everything you need to know to make the most of your day at LoanDepot Park, from recommendations on things to do and eat to the best places to sit.

The Opening Day Experience

Opening day was a special occasion marked by festivities, camaraderie, and the anticipation of a new season. Arriving early was a must to soak in the pre-game atmosphere, witness the players warming up, and enjoy the various events happening around the ballpark. The gates opened two hours before the first pitch, giving us ample time to explore.

Things to Do

•    Fan Fest: We participated in the Fan Fest, where we enjoyed interactive games, won prizes, and met fellow fans. It was a great way to engage with the community and kickstart the excitement.
•    Player Autographs: We kept an eye out for autograph sessions. Many players signed autographs before the game, providing a chance to get a treasured keepsake.
•    Team Store: We visited the Marlins Team Store to check out the latest merchandise. From jerseys to hats, we picked up some new Marlins t-shirts to show our team spirit.
•    Photo Opportunities: We captured memories at various photo spots around the park, including statues of legendary players and scenic views of the field.

Where to Eat

LoanDepot Park offered a diverse selection of food options that catered to all tastes. Every food vender utilizes kiosks to order food so you will need a credit card as no cash will be accepted. Here are some must-try eateries:

•    The Miami Mex: This eatery serves delicious Mexican cuisine, including tacos, nachos, and burritos, perfect for a hearty meal.
•    Burger Shack: They offer classic American fare with juicy burgers, fries, and shakes. It was a fan favorite for a reason.
•    Seafood Corner: You can indulged in fresh seafood offerings like shrimp, fish tacos, and calamari. A taste of the ocean while watching the game.
•    Local Flavors: Don’t miss out on local Miami flavors, such as Cuban sandwiches and empanadas, available at various stalls.

Best Places to Sit

Choosing the right seat will significantly enhance your game-day experience. LoanDepot Park is unique since it has dome that can open on nice days. The dome was closed on Opening Day so you didn’t need to worry about sun. Here are some recommendations based on different preferences:

•    Behind Home Plate: For the best view of the action, seats behind home plate were ideal. We had a clear view of pitches, swings, and all the strategic decisions made by the players and coaches.
•    Field Level: We decided to get field level seats on the first base side of the field. If you wanted to be close to the players, field-level seats along the baselines offered an intimate perspective. We caught the excitement of base hits, steals, and close plays. Although, since the away team’s dugout is on the first base side of the field we were surrounded by Pirates fans.
•    Outfield Seats: Perfect for families and groups, outfield seats provided a great view of the entire field and often came with fun activities for kids. Plus, you might catch a home run ball!
•    Club Level: For a premium experience, the Club Level offered comfortable seating, exclusive amenities, and access to lounges with upscale food and beverages.
•    Standing Areas: It is also fun to mix it up when at LoanDepot Park enjoying some of the game from the left center area behind the bullpen. They have a great bar and always great place to chat with other fans.

Best Transportation Options

Getting to LoanDepot Park was a breeze with several transportation options:
•    Public Transit: The Metrorail and Metrobus provide convenient and affordable options to reach the stadium if coming from the Miami area.
•    Train Service: If traveling from the north, Brightline offers a unique experience called the “Home Runner” where they have discounted tickets that include a shuttle to and from the park from the MiamiCentral Station.
•    Rideshare Services: Using rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft was another hassle-free option. There are designated rideshare drop-off points near the stadium.
•    Parking: For those who preferred driving, parking is available at the stadium, but it could get crowded. The park is bordered by four (4) parking garages located on the North and South sides of the ballpark and six (6) surface lots located on the East and West sides of the ballpark, each operated in a free flow parking model. We chose to prepay for parking and arrived early to secure a spot and avoided the rush. You can also pay onsite but it is more expensive.

Challenges Leaving After the Game

Leaving the stadium after the game presented some challenges:

•    Traffic Congestion: The roads around the stadium experienced heavy traffic, so we planned our exit strategy beforehand. However, once we got out of the parking lot we were forced to go west and ultimately took us an hour to get on the highway. Using mapping apps helped but the police blockades of several streets created a bigger problem. We planned on taking a different approach for our next visit.
•    Patience Required: With a large crowd leaving at the same time, patience was essential. We stayed calm and followed the directions of the event staff to exit smoothly.

Final Tips

•    Arrive Early: To fully enjoy the opening day festivities, we arrived two hours before the game started. This gave us ample time to walk around the outside areas of the field then catch some of the player warmups.
•    Dress Comfortably: We wore comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for the weather and plan for a lot of walking. The weather was sunny and warm but beware that the air conditioning could run cool when the roof is closed so if you are not a fan of cool temperatures you should bring a light jacket.
•    Stay Hydrated: Since the roof was closed during our game this was a big issues but if the We drank plenty of water, especially if attending a day game. Hydration was key to staying energized.
